Each building, structure or item of joinery is constructed with care and attention to detail derived from 38 years of woodworking experience, and an in depth and still growing knowledge and understanding of timber as a natural building material.

Restoration
During the early years of the timber frame revival in Britain the way to understand the techniques and skills involved, was through the restoration of old buildings themselves. Along with the excellent research provided by the newly begun Carpenters Fellowship in the UK and the American Guild of Timber Framers.

Our restoration service is available for framing and joinery in historic building conservation. We aim to retain as much of the original historic timbers and joinery as possible, necessary repairs are undertaken using recommended techniques and carefully sourced traditional materials.
Joinery
Our joinery work is related to the timber frame buildings we design and construct. We also carry out historic joinery repairs and replacements required for conservation works on listed buildings.

Among the joinery projects we undertake are included doors, windows panelled rooms, beds, carved bookcases and, occasionally, other furniture as seen in the gallery and inspiration page.

Most of our apprentices have been trained as bench joiners in the national Apprenticeship curriculum alongside more traditional timber framing skills learnt 'in house'. The precision woodwork joinery skills are used to create the fine work on all our frames.
New Build
Each timber frame is individually designed using 3D CAD visualizations, and hand built in our workshop in Branscombe, East Devon using traditional mortice and tenon joinery held with riven oak pegs along with the best of modern methods of frame construction required to fulfil the criteria of planning and building control.

Our timber frames are made from responsibly farmed French and, occasionally English oak. We like to use, and recommend Douglas fir or Larch as these timbers are sourced in the UK. All our timber is selected, graded and cut at a local sawmill in East Devon to reduce delivery distances and keep our carbon footprint to the minimum. Traditional timber framing is a versatile method of construction and can be used to build anything from barns, covered porch areas, garden furniture to entire homes. We are broad minded and open to all ideas.
